What usually applies
Most tickets include one personal item. Many tickets also include one carry-on. Checked bags are often extra on the lowest domestic fares and more likely to be included on international or premium cabins. Lowest-fare tickets (often called Basic Economy or similar) may restrict carry-on bags, seat choice, and changes.

International baggage liability — Montreal Convention 1999
On most international journeys, airline liability for lost, damaged, or delayed checked baggage is limited to about 1,288 SDR (roughly $1,730 USD) per passenger. File damage complaints within 7 days of receipt and delay complaints within 21 days of return. Consider travel insurance if you need coverage above that limit.
